Mary Smith

The Derbyshire & Cheshire Cricket League is saddened to share the news of the passing of former umpire Mary Smith.

Mary was a true pioneer for women officiating in local league cricket. A teacher by profession, she moved to the Stockport area with her husband Ken and soon became involved with Woodley CC.

Having played cricket with her three brothers and at school in the 1950s, she carried a lifelong love for the game — a love that led her to take up umpiring after settling in the area.

Mary stood in her first DCCL match in 1980, continuing through to 2003, also officiating in the Cheshire County League before later moving to Cumbria, where she continued her umpiring duties. Her career took her to women’s matches at Old Trafford, Headingley and Taunton, including an international fixture between England and Ireland.

The Guinness Book of Records recognises Mary as the longest‑serving female umpire, with a remarkable career spanning 41 years and 152 days.

League Vice President Paul Eyre shared a fond memory from a match against Hayfield:

“Mary umpired us against Hayfield, and I was bowling with the batsman on 99. I trapped him lbw bang in front — Mary said not out. I accepted the decision and carried on, the batter getting his 100. In the bar after, I asked Mary how that was not out and she said with a smile, ‘He’s a lovely lad and I wanted to see him get his hundred.’ We all laughed and had another pint.”

Mary’s warmth, humour and dedication made her a cherished figure across our league.

With the support of our Women’s Section, we are proud to announce that their cup competition will now be known as the Mary Smith High Peak Cup, ensuring her name and legacy live on within the Derbyshire & Cheshire Cricket League.
